Biopsy in Manteca CA
If you visit us at Aura Family Dentistry because you have noticed changes in your mouth, we may perform a biopsy. While occasional gum irritation or tooth soreness may come and go without consequence, abnormalities may point to an underlying problem. Always call us to schedule an appointment if an oral lesion appears, or if something just doesn’t feel quite right. Catching a problem early – like oral cancer – offers the greatest rate of success for returning your mouth to full oral health.

What Is a Biopsy?
A biopsy is a procedure in which Dr. Damle gathers a small amount of oral tissue that she will then send to a lab. Rest assured, this is a simple, quick process. Dr. Damle will run a small, bristled brush across an oral lesion or the affected site. The brush will gather epithelial cells from the uppermost layers of your mouth. We will send the biopsy to a lab where pathologists will analyze the tissue. You may need to wait up to 10 days for results.

Dr. Damle usually takes a biopsy of a lesion to determine whether it is cancerous. If the test results come back negative, our dentist will move forward with treatment to heal the lesion or irritation. However, if the results are positive, we will discuss treatment options.

What Are Common Symptoms to Monitor?
Most people suffer from a canker sore or minor gum irritation from time to time. In fact, up one out of ten people will notice the lining of their mouths change within their lifetime. Because early detection greatly increases your survival rate, watching for oral cancer symptoms and reporting them to Dr. Damle immediately is essential. Watch for the following symptoms:

  • A chronically dry mouth
  • Mouth ulcers or general irritation
  • Swelling
  • Red or white patches in your throat or beneath your tongue
  • Infections that heal and return
  • Soreness or bleeding in your throat
  • Mouth pain

Am I a Good Candidate?
If your oral tissue shows signs of change that do not point directly to periodontal disease, a biopsy is the definitive method of reaching an accurate diagnosis. Detecting oral cancer early greatly increases your survival rate. A biopsy is a simple process that can save your life. If Dr. Damle has any suspicion that your oral lesion or irritation may be symptomatic of oral cancer, you are an excellent candidate for a biopsy. Remember, our team is here to support you and make you feel at ease. We will explain each step of the biopsy and answer your questions, so you can feel safe and secure throughout the process.
