Periodontal Gum Disease in Manteca CA
If you brushed your teeth and noticed a trace amount of blood in the sink, do not be too alarmed. Examine your gums in the mirror. Do they appear a bit swollen or red? If any of these symptoms apply, you may have periodontal disease, also called gum disease. Fortunately, periodontal disease is treatable. However, because it can also lead to severe damage, you will want to come in to Aura Family Dentistry as soon as possible so we can return your mouth to its full health.

What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease, also called gum disease or periodontitis, is an inflammatory illness of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. This disease typically begins when a sticky substance called plaque builds up on your teeth. When you do not remove plaque through daily care, it adheres to your teeth. Plaque hardens into tartar, which you can no longer address with brushing and flossing. Because plaque is mostly made up of bacteria and it is stuck to your teeth, the bacteria will begin to multiply and move beneath your gumline. Once beneath your gums, bacterial pathogens slowly eat away at your gum tissue and your teeth, and may eventually destroy your jawbone.

What Are Common Symptoms?
Know what to look for so you can stop periodontal disease before it leads to gum recession or bone destruction, which typically require
bone grafts to repair. The following symptoms act as red flags that you need to visit us at Aura Family Dentistry immediately:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen gums, instead of healthy firm gums
  • Inflamed gums
  • Red gums, instead of healthy pink gums
  • A gumline that looks like it has pulled back from your teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Painful chewing

How Do You Treat Gum Disease?
Periodontal disease usually begins with gingivitis. This includes plaque and tartar buildup and inflamed gums. However, this early form of disease is reversible if you treat it quickly. A professional cleaning is often all it takes to stop inflammation before it flourishes into periodontal disease, which requires more advanced treatment.

To treat existing periodontal disease, the process is three-fold. First, Dr. Damle will clean away plaque and tartar through procedure called scaling and root planing, often referred to as a “deep cleaning.” The bacterial infection beneath your gums may require antibiotics, either orally, or with direct placement, such as ARESTIN. Finally, you will need to follow good dental hygiene at home on a daily basis to maintain oral health and prevent further disease development.
