Bone Grafting

Bone Grafting in Manteca CA
If you have suffered from severe periodontal disease, or a trauma to your mouth, you may have experienced bone loss. Your jawbone supports your oral structure, includes your gums and your teeth. To prevent your bone from deteriorating any further, Dr. Damle may perform bone grafting to restore areas of missing bone tissue.

What Is Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that stimulates new bone and tissue growth. However, because your body cannot fully restore missing jawbone tissue, Dr. Damle performs grafts. A graft is the process of transplanting healthy tissue onto your damaged site. The grafted bone tissue fuses with your existing bone to restore your jaw to its optimal structure and function.

Dr. Damle will numb the affected area and pull your gums away from the damaged bone. She will then clean the area, removing bacteria and smoothing the destroyed bone tissue. Bone grafting material from your own healthy bone tissue, artificial tissue, or from another source, will be used during the procedure. In certain instances, Dr. Damle will use “guided tissue regeneration.” In this case, she will place a membrane over the bone graft before repositioning your gums back into place. The membrane promotes healing and prevents your gum tissue from invading the healing site. We will stitch your gums closed and the healing process will take several months.

What Are the Benefits of Bone Grafting?
Your jawbone will not rejuvenate itself. Because your jawbone is the primary support structure for your oral cavity, its health is significant to the proper functioning and appearance of your entire mouth. Consider the benefits of bone grafting if you are still deciding whether it is appropriate for you:

  • Healthy bone supports healthy teeth for daily functioning, including chewing and speaking.
  • A supportive, full jawbone will make it possible for you to wear prosthetics, such as dental implants or dentures, for a full, beautiful smile and chewing ability.
  • The bones in your oral cavity support your entire face – complete, stable bones prevent sagging and premature wrinkling that occurs when your face loses its support system.
