Extraction Site Preservation

Extraction Site Preservation in Manteca CA
Now that Dr. Damle has removed your tooth, preserving the extraction site is the next essential step in restoring your mouth to full function and beauty while maintaining its structural support and health. While the body has an immense capacity to heal, you must provide excellent care of the site while it repairs itself. Once the site heals, you and Dr. Damle will discuss your choices for filling in the empty space.

How Do I Care for My Empty Space?
Providing excellent home care is the key factor in successful healing and quickly replacing your tooth with a prosthetic, for full function and a smile you enjoy showing off. After your tooth extraction, Dr. Damle will ask you to adhere to the following aftercare requirements:

  • Bite down gently on gauze to stop residual bleeding. If all bleeding does not cease within 24 hours, call our office immediately.
  • Eat soft foods, such as pudding or Jello, to avoid damaging the extraction site.
  • Do not use a sucking motion, such as sucking liquid through a straw or smoking a cigarette, as this may dislodge the clot forming in the extraction site. This is your body’s natural way of forming an oral scab. Dislodging the clot that forms in the empty space will result in dry socket, a painful condition that will require additional trips to our office for subsequent treatments.
  • Gently rest an ice pack on your face to reduce swelling and discomfort.
  • Treat discomfort with over-the-counter analgesic. For severe pain, speak with Dr. Damle about prescription pain relievers.

Why Do I Need to Replace My Missing Tooth?
After tooth extraction, you will have one or several empty spaces in your mouth. Missing teeth can impact your daily life. You may feel self-conscious about your smile, not wanting onlookers to notice the space. Or, you may have difficulty speaking clearly or eating comfortably. Additionally, your tooth acts as a structural placeholder within your jaw. When the tooth is no longer present, your jawbone may slowly deteriorate, and surrounding teeth may shift toward the empty space, resulting in misalignment.

What Are My Options for Tooth Replacement?
The solution you choose to replace your missing tooth depends on a variety of considerations. For example, dental implants require a sturdy jawbone, while dentures require a completely toothless arch. Dental implants can replace teeth spread across your top or bottom arch, while a bridge can only treat missing teeth in a row. We offer the following prosthetics, which you may discuss with Dr. Damle:
